Hello Earthlings! Welcome to my series of "saving the planet, on a budget!"
Today i'm going to show you guys how to make your own Laundry Detergent sustainably & affordably. Please remember, in order to make this recipe as sustainably as possible, try to find these very simple, very common ingredients in either your local bulk bin OR packaged in boxes which can be easily recycled. This recipe should cost you no more than $10 to make, especially if you already have the ingredients on hand. OKAY! Let's get into DIY-ing.
INGREDIENTS:Â
3 cups Washing Soda ***see notes***Â
3 cups Baking Soda
1 cup Epsom SaltÂ
1/2 cup Sea SaltÂ
*optional* 20 drop of Essential Oils *i prefer tea tree & eucalyptus mix
*** to make your own washing soda: spread 3 cups of baking soda out evenly onto a baking sheet & bake at 400 degrees F for 1-2 hours. No need to buy another box of washing soda when you can just make your own at home! Remember, this is a sustainable & affordable recipe. I wanted to make it as easy as possible for you guys. IF YOUâD LIKE: add a dash of white vinegar in the load for additional fabric softening powersÂ
What do each of the ingredients do?
washing soda: is high in alkalinity & will help remove grease & stains from clothing
baking soda: helps soften water & keep clothes bright
epsom salt: softens fabrics & removes dirtÂ
sea salt: is a natural purifier. itâs also great for removing stains, softening clothes & water, & keeping your clothes BRIGHT!
This recipe should yield you about 60 oz of laundry powder. It is safe to use on colored clothes, delicates, towels & whites. Use about 2-3 tablespoons per load. For very soiled loads I like to add 2 tablespoons of this powder with 1 laundry detergent sheet.Â
Best kept in a cool dry place in a glass container. I use a 64oz glass jar with seal tight lid.Â
I hope you all will give this a try & it helps you further your sustainability journey in the laundry room! Leave any comments or questions below!
